Descriptif de l'employeur

As an international research institute, the IRD helps to make societies more resilient in the face of global upheaval. It is present in more than 50 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, as well as in the French Overseas Territories.

Its research activities provide concrete answers to priority needs: mitigating and adapting to climate change, combating poverty and inequality, preserving biodiversity, access to healthcare, and taking social dynamics into account. Research questions are developed in conjunction with local players and populations. Our teams bring together different perspectives, disciplines and knowledge through long-term partnerships to develop robust, high-impact solutions.

The IRD promotes research that benefits the greatest number of people. It shares the results of its projects and puts science at the service of action. In doing so, it supports the transformation of societies towards fairer and more sustainable social, economic and environmental models.

Descriptif de la structure

LEMAR is an interdisciplinary laboratory with 150 permanent members, including marine ecologists, biologists, chemists, physicists, and legal experts. Its goals are to: (1) conduct fundamental and socially relevant research; (2) support sustainable development in both the Global North and South; (3) foster innovation for the economy and public policy; and (4) contribute to interdisciplinary training in marine and coastal sciences. Its cross-cutting “South” axis unites IRD, UBO, CNRS, and Ifremer members working on Southern projects, driving LEMAR’s global engagement.

IUEM focuses on studying oceans, coasts, and related human activities through observation, experimentation, and modeling. It shares this knowledge via education and outreach to promote sustainable maritime development and ecosystem preservation. Its work is structured around three core missions: research, observation, and training, supported by a dedicated Research and Support Unit (UAR), which pools resources from IED, UBO, and CNRS.

Une mission attractive

The person recruited will be responsible for supporting the application of Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) bioenergetic models to the various species or marine communities of interest to LEMAR, LOPS and their partners in the South.

Reporting to Frédéric Jean, Director of IUEM, your activities will be as follows:

-          Designing the structure of a database of life-history traits and environmental data for each species of interest (i) that can be easily modified by non-modellers (e.g. using Excel files) and (ii) that can be used to collect, structure, verify and store the data required for DEB-type models (life-history traits and environmental data).

-          Interacting with the LEMAR and LOPS teams and their partners in the South to populate this database with data on species of interest as part of an Open Science approach co-constructed by the partners with the support of the IRD's Mission for Open Science.

-          Interact with the LEMAR, LOPS and their partners in the South to populate this database with species of interest as part of an Open Science approach co-constructed by the partners with the support of the IRD's Open Science Mission

-          Complete a literature review (data mining) of existing data on these species of interest for estimating the parameters of these models and reference this work on the AmP online portal hosted by the IRD. mining) of existing data on these species of interest for estimating the parameters of these models and reference this work on the AmP online portal hosted by the UAR113 IUEM

-          Participate in estimating the parameters of these models and assessing the associated uncertainty, in conjunction with LEMAR's DEB modellers

-          To guide and advise experimenters and observers on the implementation of experimental and sampling protocols for acquiring the data required for DEB-type models

-          To participate in the supervision of students and post-doctoral students implementing these modelling approaches, in particular through the support of the DEBSea online course developed by LEMAR for partners in developing countries.

-          To monitor and organise the literature on bioenergetic modelling, applications of DEB theory and parameter estimation methods.

• Your Future Team

You will join the DISCOVERY team (marine ecology: diversity, structure, dynamics, and functioning – 50 permanent staff, 25–30 PhD students/postdocs), working closely with the PANORAMA and CHIBIDO teams at LEMAR, which focus on experimental approaches.

At IUEM, the Research Support Unit (UAR) includes shared services (administration, IT – SIMI, communication, international relations, training), technical support for sea-based research, and shared platforms.

You will contribute to the missions of the IT department.

Le profil que nous recherchons

You will have developed the following skills:

-          Advanced expertise in Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) bioenergetic modelling: (i) Mathematics: mechanistic modelling (differential equations), parameter estimation methods, sensitivity analysis, (ii) IT: programming in Matlab, Python, Julia, or R, (iii) mastery of the concepts of DEB theory

-          Knowledge of marine ecology, the life cycle of marine species, and the environmental stressors they face

-          Knowledge of sampling and experimental methods adapted to the different trophic levels of marine food webs and to species of interest to aquaculture and fisheries

-          Knowledge of database management

-          Written and spoken command of the English language

You will have the following people skills:

-          Strong interest in capacity building in the South

-          Interest in supporting Open Science approaches, particularly in the South

-          Good interpersonal and organisational skills

Training / experience :

Master's degree, PhD or engineering diploma in marine biology, marine ecology, biological oceanography or equivalent diploma in terrestrial ecology with documented experience (minimum 2 years) in DEB-type bioenergetic modelling.

Throughout your career, the IRD will support you in developing your skills.

The Institute provides you with a range of tools such as the digital integration path, access to continuing education, promotion and mobility.

Depending on the activity, the IRD offers the possibility of teleworking from 1 to 3 days a week.

For IT positions:

By joining the IRD, you will benefit from :

- 32 days' holiday + 13 days' RTT (for a full-time job at 38.30 hours per week)

- Luncheon vouchers OR canteen meals (depending on the site)

- Annual subscription (optional) to the Association des Œuvres Sociales: holiday-leisure and sports-cultural benefits

- Contribution of €15/month towards social security.
